Neverwhere [prototipo]
Neverwhere is a choreographic installation in which the viewer is invited to enter and contemplate.
A journey of the mind. A visionary afterlife.
The visual space becomes fluid through a chromatic-luminous device that emphasises perceptual instability.
An abstract and ideal space, with pure colours and a modernist foundation, finds an uncertain and, one might say, postmodernist outcome, not only in the disruption of its clear legibility through shifting colours and lights, impure colours and gradients, but also in being inhabited by performers and the audience together, with all the dissonant realism that they introduce.
Neverwhere is an abstract, contemporary habitat, neither Heaven nor Hell, an otherworldly place where disorientation and wonder are the realms one must traverse before ‘going out to see the stars again’.
Unsettling: within this abstraction, there is nothing of the everyday capable of evoking narrative recognition.
Disturbing: colour carries with it an inevitable dramatic charge, evocative of an elsewhere. The unsettling and the uncanny are capable of generating Bataille’s eroticism by drawing the visitor’s gaze and steps towards an imaginative world that is unnatural yet desired. The entire staged action is choreographed to generate desire. The desire to touch, to traverse, to look, to draw closer to an unknown universe.
Neverwhere is a device inspired by Dante Alighieri’s The Divine Comedy: the possibility of being plunged into a visionary world.
