Nicola Montalbini – Il Pavimento

Il Pavimento (lit. The Floor) is a public art installation project for Porta Adriana in Ravenna, conceived by Nicola Montalbini and created by Montalbini himself, in collaboration with Marco Santi’s Gruppo Mosaicisti Ravenna, the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna, and the students of the Academy Roberta Casadei, Francesca Fantoni, Lorenzo Baruzzi, Chiara Cappucci, Yinzhuoran Cheng, Martina Di Mattia, Mattia Farinelli, Chiara Ferraresi, Xia Lingjie, Hernan Lombardo, Marica Zanga, organized by marte, curated by Eleonora Savorelli and Daniele Torcellini, for the 9th Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic.
A unique mosaic comes to life under the arches of Porta Adriana: an intricate floor of tiles that is both a physical passageway and a journey through time and the memories of the city. A living mosaic inhabited by monsters, creatures that come from the past, readings, ghosts of the past, direct references to ancient mosaics, and fantasies about the future. Montalbini’s project takes the form of a collection of fragments that only a floor mosaic can bring together into a single entity.
