Vasini of Sara Vasini
Opening: 1 November at 11 a.m.
Curated by Sandro Malossini. In Vasini’s poetry, repetition is a recurring theme, addressed several times using different means and forms in “Tu”, “Voglio una Pelle Splendida”, “What did you do in the Great War, Mr. Joyce? I wrote Ulysses. What did you do?”, and “Remain In Light”. Repetition, as such, may appear to the inattentive eye as a need to mass-produce a work, in the wake of mass production that does not allow error to exist; instead, it is a methodology that generates a disconnect between signifier and meaning, a magma that induces a state of ecstasy (as with the tongue twisters of the Greek priests of Demetrio Stratos). Repetition expresses a need for variation on the theme, in which exploratory error is allowed, exalting a concept that, when stressed, continually redefines its boundaries. Therefore, it is not the gesture that is perfected, but rather the idea, which tends to reincarnate itself in changing forms. In addition, we find many other themes and key elements of Vasini’s poetics, such as play, not in the sense of toys, but rather lively wordplay. Vasini – due to etymological and usage affinities – appropriates the vase as a representative element, a material sought after with great care, which adds shells to a modern heraldic representation – a fundamental material in her artistic research, for her who comes from the sea, and uses them as mosaic tiles in a mosaic interpretation at the gates of Arte Povera. But if for heraldry the vase expresses fertility, a container of virtues, in Hesiod’s myth it takes on a more complex meaning. This is why Vasini seals the vases in “Vasini”, as if to restore Pandora’s original sin, in an attempt to keep her artistic universe pure, safe from the dynamics of a surrounding world that seems to be collapsing day by day.
