Verdiano Marzi – Le ali del mosaico
The exhibition is focused on the sculptural triptych ‘L’Italia s’è Desta’ located in Palazzo Guiccioli, at the end of the tour of the Museum of Risorgimento. The artwork was created by Verdiano Marzi on the occasion of the Centenary of the Unification of Italy.
“The work is one of the most significant created by mosaic artist Verdiano Marzi: a triptych composed of mosaic figures depicting three winged, headless female bodies, freely inspired by the Greek myth of Nike, goddess of victory. Of all the different representations of the goddess of victory, the artist favoured that of Samothrace. The Nikes landed in Ravenna after flying from Paris, where they were created in 2018 […] The wonderful innovation of this great work of art, conceived through three distinct units, each with its own identity, yet indivisible from each other to form a single entity, consists in the representation of the wings. Compared to other Nikes from the classical era, these are less open to the wind and more composed than the body, as if the flight were about to end. In them, the feathers merge into a single large tile to ideally create a single vast feather, shaped by the tangential energy of light. The surface of these large tiles, while generating a new plastic rhythm, magically maintains the gentle modulations of the feathered wings. […]” Ing. Francesca Fiorentini.
