Sergio Cicognani – Pittore del mosaico
The 7th Biennial of Contemporary Mosaic pays tribute to Sergio Cicognani (1927-2019), one of the leading figures in Ravenna and international mosaic art over the last fifty years.
An exponent of a unique era, he pursued his artistic career in schools and workshops, starting with his training at the free courses of the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna until 1948, when he joined the newly formed Ravenna Mosaicists Group. In that year, he began participating in art exhibitions, achieving success and recognition. During his long and distinguished artistic career, he collaborated with renowned contemporary artists such as Mathieu, Severini, Guttuso, Kokoschka, Gutman, Saetti, Zancanaro and others.
Sergio Cicognani’s artistic poetics break down and reassemble into an original and refined language suspended between mosaic and painting. A material dialogue between glass enamels and pictorial pigments is presented in this small but significant exhibition of largely unpublished works, created between the late 1940s and 2000.
