I mosaici neri di Ravenna: alla scoperta dei mosaici in un viaggio tattile sensoriale per persone non vedenti
The aim of the ‘Black Mosaics of Ravenna’ project is to tell the environmental history of Ravenna’s main mosaics – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – in a completely innovative way, one that is also accessible to blind and visually impaired people.
The project is being developed using state-of-the-art software to create a series of tactile sensory panels capable of reproducing certain mosaic depictions. The panels are created through a process involving: surveying the mosaic, breaking it down, rearranging the tesserae into a varied pattern of thicknesses, and reconstructing it as it was originally. This process results in the creation of a mosaic with three-dimensional motifs, generating a ‘bas-relief’ effect that can be perceived by the blind through touch.
The colour black symbolises the darkness in which the blind live.
