The Sala del Mosaico at the Classense Library has opened to the public. The space is characterised by a refined ancient floor mosaic that adorns the room, which formerly belonged to the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna, then situated within the Classense monastic complex. The work consists of three separate panels, discovered in 1875 near the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare in Classe and subsequently reassembled in this room between 1889 and 1890, under the direction of Gaetano Savini, a painter and lecturer at the local Academy of Fine Arts. The mosaic is thought to date from the 5th–6th centuries and is the work of masters of Eastern origin.
