Stefano Mazzotti – Sol Invictus

For the sun to return to its stronger and more lasting position in the sky each day, after months in which its maximum height diminished on the horizon, was, for all cultures, the moment when light triumphed over darkness, heat over cold, life over death. And the sun invictus – the sun that triumphs over shadows, that brings knowledge and wisdom – remains a powerful example and myth to remind us of the winter solstice. In the ancient mosaic as in the contemporary one, light and darkness are essence, in a contrast that traces new possible codes – technical and aesthetic – of which Stefano Mazzotti knows how to make good use, methodologically resting on traditional syntaxes, linking himself to the enigma and the myth.
